New to the Library: Bernard Barker’s ‘The Pendulum Swings’

Bernard Barker spent 19 years as a secondary school head before taking up a post at the School of Education, University of Leicester, and he is highly critical of the assumptions that have shaped government education policy over the past 20 or so years. He considers that current policy is little different in essence from the ‘payment by results ‘ system of the nineteenth century. In his book ‘The Pendulum Swings: Transforming School Reform’ he explores why there has been so little progress towards the government’s goal of transforming society and  makes recommendations for alternative approaches to school reform, which would result in teachers and schools being able to make a real and positive difference to children’s lives.
