New to the Library: ‘The New Folk Devils: Muslim Boys and Education in England’ by Farzana Shain

Once characterised as passive and hard-working, Muslim boys are now often portrayed as a threat to society because of the supposed likelihood  of their involvement in terrorism or gang crime. In The New Folk Devils: Muslim Boys and Education in England the author, Farzana
Shain, draws on interviews she conducted with 24 schoolboys in the West Midlands, aged 12 -18, in order to “challenge the dominant representations of Muslim boys and young men as social problems, as modern day folk devils.” She explores a range of issues that affect the boys’ experience of schooling and their relationships in and out of school.
